Daikokuya Hanten: Imabari’s Beloved Yakibuta Tamago Meshi Diner (Roast Pork & Egg Rice Bowl)

Imabari is the Shikoku-side gateway of the Shimanami Kaido, and its most famous local dish is yakibuta tamago meshi — rice topped with roast pork, soft fried eggs, and a savoury-sweet sauce. Among the city’s long-established shops, Daikokuya Hanten has a special following among riders and road-trippers. It sits along an arterial road a little outside the town centre, so it is an easy stop if you are exploring the area by car or motorbike.

One of Imabari’s three famous shops

Yakibuta tamago meshi is Imabari’s signature “B-kyu gourmet” — inexpensive, hearty local comfort food. It is a genuine local champion: the dish took first place at the West Japan B-kyu Gourmet Grand Prix in 2017. It began life as a quick staff meal (makanai) in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant called Gobankaku (now closed), where it was popular with the cooks. When those cooks opened their own restaurants and put it on the menu, word spread, and it grew into the local icon it is today.

Daikokuya Hanten is counted as one of the three most famous long-established shops serving it, alongside Shigematsu Hanten and Hakurakuten. If you would like to compare all three, see our roundup linked at the end of this article.

A gathering spot for riders

One thing that sets Daikokuya Hanten apart is its crowd. The owner is a rider himself, and the shop has become a natural meeting point for motorcyclists — the car park is small, but you will often see a row of bikes parked around it. Inside, the walls are decorated with signatures and photos of the riders who have visited over the years, giving the place a warm, well-loved atmosphere.

It is also genuinely popular with everyone else. It draws customers from well beyond Ehime, and at lunchtime it fills up fast — on a recent visit the last few seats were taken the moment we sat down. If you can, arrive a little early.

The bowl itself

Daikokuya Hanten’s signature is roast pork that is shredded fine and spread generously across the bowl, topped with two eggs. The owner explains the reasoning: because the dish is meant to be mixed together, breaking the pork up makes it blend more easily with the rice and egg — so every spoonful carries pork, egg, and sauce at once.

The flavour is firm and well-defined. The pork looks dark and richly seasoned, but it is not heavy or cloying. And while yakibuta tamago meshi sauce is often very sweet, Daikokuya’s is less sweet than the local average, which lets the savoury, clearly seasoned pork come through — on a recent visit that meaty flavour seemed to stand out even more than before. It is a bowl you can dig straight into, which is exactly why it has such a loyal following among riders who have burned through energy on the road. A set with a small ramen is a great way to round out the meal. Hearty and satisfying, it is the kind of dish that helps you push through summer fatigue.

Good to know before you go

Lunch only. This is the most important point: Daikokuya Hanten is open only for lunch, from 11:00 to 14:00, and closed on Wednesdays. Plan an early visit, especially since it fills quickly.

Ordering without Japanese. It is a casual local diner; the star dish is easy to order, and a set with ramen is a popular choice.

How much does it cost? Yakibuta tamago meshi is B-kyu gourmet, so it is very affordable — usually under 1,000 yen for a bowl, depending on the size you choose.

How do you eat it? Break the soft yolk, mix the shredded pork, rice, egg, and sauce together across the whole bowl, and dig in — that is the local way to eat it, and it is exactly why Daikokuya shreds the pork so finely.

Getting there. It is a little outside the central station area along an arterial road, so it is most convenient by car or motorbike. There is a small car park.

How does it fit a Shimanami trip? If you are touring by car or motorbike around the Shikoku end of the route, this makes a great, hearty lunch stop — just remember to arrive before 14:00.

Round out your Imabari food day

Because Daikokuya is lunch-only, the easiest way to compare Imabari’s yakibuta tamago meshi is to have lunch here and save the other famous shops — which also open in the evening — for dinner. Pair it with a visit to Imabari Castle in the afternoon, or a ride across the Shimanami Kaido bridges, for a full and delicious day.
